Mark Holmes attended the 8th Downs Syndrome World Swimming Championships in Florence, Italy in July, the competition was held in an outdoor 50 metre pool.
Mark entered 8 events plus relays. It proved to be a most successful Championship as he was awarded 7 medals in total.
The medals he won were gold in the 100 freestyle heat in a personal best time and a gold in the 50 butterfly heat also a PB.
A silver in the 50 backstroke heat and a bronze in the 100 backstroke heat and a bronze in the 200 backstroke heat.
Mark reached the World Finals in the 50 backstroke and came 5th, 100 backstroke and came 6th and the 200 backstroke and came 8th all his swims were PB’s.
The 400 IM was a timed final and Mark came 9th. In his heat he swam 7:44.91 beating the Masters Record in the 30 to 35 year age group of 8:04.00 by 15.09 seconds.
Ratification of the record is still awaited however.
In the relays swimming as part of the British team, Mark helped them secure two bronze medals in both the 4 x 100m and 4 x 50m Medley relays.
