European Down Syndrome Open Swimming Competition: Southampton April 2017

Holly Bocking, Mark Holmes and Helen Thompson from Phoenix attended this gala as part of the England Team. They were competing with teams from Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Sweden, Spain, Russia and Estonia.

All three were aiming to get medals but also achieve qualifying times for the forthcoming European Championships which will be held in Paris in October, and they got some impressive results.

Holly won Gold medals in 25m butterfly and 50m breaststroke, Silver in 100m IM and a Bronze in the 100m breaststroke.
Helen won Gold medals in the 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke and a Bronze in 100m Freestyle.
Mark won Gold medals in the 100m breaststroke and the relay and Silver medals in the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 200m backstroke and 100m IM.

Holly now has 6 QTs for Paris: 50m backstroke, freestyle, and breaststroke and 100m backstroke, breaststroke and IM.
Helen also has 6 QTs for Paris: 50m backstroke, freestyle, and breaststroke and 100m backstroke, freestyle and breaststroke.
Both girls are achieving Women’s qualifying times, despite still being Junior swimmers, so these are great achievements!

Mark is a more experienced campaigner, having represented his country many times over the years and he has 12 QTs for Paris in 50m and 100m butterfly, breaststroke freestyle and backstroke, 100m IM and 200m freestyle, backstroke and IM. The difficulty for Mark will be in selecting the 8 races he can swim in Paris!

Thanks for this are due to all the Phoenix coaches and to Julie for leading them so well. Also to the Phoenix Committee who stepped in over the past year to keep the club running. Phoenix enables our swimmers to have such amazing opportunities and we should be proud of all their achievements!
